iPhone Apps We Love: NetShare - Share Your 3G/EDGE Connection With Your Computer [IPhone Apps]

NetShare is one app we never thought would make it onto the official iPhone App Store. All it does is set up a SOCKS5 proxy for you to get your laptop/computer online through use of the 3G/EDGE connection. Does it work? Yes. Yes it does, much to our surprise. EDGE works just fine, although Mahoney says it’s slow as balls. 3G impressions in a sec. Be careful of how much bandwidth you’re using, since your provider probably makes a frowny face at you using their network to power your laptop, however “unlimited” your plan may be. [NetShare - Thanks Matthew and Ryan!]

Update: Having problems setting it up on my iPhone 3G. I follow the instructions and the phone seems to “connect”, but that’s about it. No connections shown in the NetShare app, and nothing goes through.

KNGT offers up Windows XP-powered icom MK1 carputer

We genuinely hope you don’t value your dash very much, because a great deal of it will vanish if you opt to install KNGT’s icom MK1.The full-fledged car computer wows passengers and drivers alike with its 6.95-inch 800 x 480 resolution display, on-screen QWERTY keyboard, wireless connectivity and mobile TV (T-DMB) tuner. Furthermore, you’ll find a 40GB / 80GB hard drive, upwards of 2GB of RAM, a few USB 2.0 ports, a 1.6GHz Intel CPU and Windows XP running the show. You know all those threats you made when you were younger about heading out and just living in your ‘79 Riviera? Following through just got a whole lot easier.

Create Your Vision of the Future… Using MS Paint [MS Paint Contest]

This week, the Photoshop Contest is gonna be a little different. How so? Well, it’s not going to be a Photoshop Contest at all. It’s going to be an MS Paint Contest. Last week we saw some of the most technically-proficient entries in a contest yet, which was awesome. But let’s lower the barrier to entry here. Not everyone is a Photoshop genius, but pretty much everyone can create an MS Paint masterpiece. Which is why this week, by popular demand, I want you to create your vision of the future for me using everyone’s favorite rudimentary image editor. This being a unique contest does mean, however, that there are some extra caveats. Read on.

First of all, I’m expecting a boatload of entries for this one because so many more people have the necessary tools. That means the standards are raised on this one. Since making it pretty isn’t necessary, only the funniest and most creative entries will make it. Nobody wants a gallery with 500 MS Paint abortions in it. I’ll be whittling it down to the best of the best, so put some effort in.

Secondly, don’t, for the love of god, send me BMP files. I know that’s what the default setting is, but I think my inbox would explode if I suddenly got hundreds of emails with 1.5MB image files attached. Use PNG, JPG or GIF. As usual, name your files FirstnameLastname.jpg (or .gif or .png) so you’re credited properly for your genius.

Thirdly… have fun! I want to see some balls-out crazy entries here, and I’m sure I won’t be disappointed. I can’t wait to see what you nutbags come up with.

Got it? Send me your non-bitmap files to contests@gizmodo.com. I’ll post the Gallery of MS Paint Champions on Tuesday.

Every Neonode N2 recalled due to reception problems

Filed under:

Hey, you remember the Neonode N2? The OG full-face touchscreen phone? Well, better cherish those memories, since every N2 is being recalled due to “reception problems.” A fix is apparently ready to go, but seeing as we haven’t heard a peep from Neonode since it promised us a totally new OS and handsets back at CES, we’ve got a feeling you might be better off swapping out handsets for a while — besides, who still uses EDGE?

Timelapse Video: Building the Lego Death Star Diorama [Exclusive]

newVideoPlayer(”/legods_gizmodo.flv”, 520, 312,”"); Here’s a bunch of crazy Lego heads building the Lego Death Star diorama, probably the best Lego set available this side of the Millennium Falcon with 3,803 pieces, and 21 mini-figs—a stunning number for any Lego set—but definitely the most fun to play with, with 14 scenarios from the original movie.

Looking at the time it’s taking me to finish the Falcon, I’m not going to try this unless I can get Lindsay Joy someone to help me. [Lego in Gizmodo]

Dell Vostro 2510 now configurable online

Filed under:

It looks like those already sold on Dell’s slightly less business-like Vostro 2510 laptop don’t have to wait too long to get their hands on one, as the just-leaked laptop is now configurable on Dell’s website with an estimated ship time of 3 to 5 days. As we had heard, the base price starts at a reasonable $899, which includes a 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo T5670 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, and a better than usual 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS graphics card. If that’s not enough, you can push things up past the $2,000 mark pretty easily with a faster processor, a max 4GB of RAM, an Blu-ray drive, and other premium add-ons. Hit up the link below to get started.

Best Buy Vending Machine Haunts Dallas/Forth Worth Airport [Best Buy]

Forgetting to bring your electronics with you on a flight sucks really, really hard. This is why the DFW airport has allowed Best Buy to put Best Buy Express vending machines inside several terminals, giving travelers a chance to pick up the lost gadgets, chargers or headphones that they would otherwise have to do without. Is it a good deal? Probably not. But think of it as the electronics equivalent of having to buy a pack of Corn Nuts and going to town because you missed lunch. [Dallas News]

Creative rolls out (working) driver update for X-Fi cards

While at least one enterprising individual did his best to get Creative’s X-Fi sound cards to play nice with Vista, Creative wasn’t exactly keen on that idea and apparently decided to have a go at updating its drivers itself instead (go figure). Among other things, the new, long overdue drivers supposedly fix the problematic Dolby Digital and DTS decoding, and they add DVD Audio playback, which previously worked under Windows XP but not in Vista — you know, the little things. Hit up the link below to find the link to the drivers themselves, which work with all X-Fi cards except the X-Fi Extreme Audio, which is clearly so “Extreme” it doesn’t need driver updates.

[Thanks, Bamboo]

Apple Now Telling Developers How Many People Download Their App [IPhone Apps]

We reported in our massive feature on the SDK and App Store’s shortcomings that Apple didn’t even tell devs how many times their app is downloaded. I guess they realized devs might wanna know, ’cause now they’re offering daily download statistics to registered devs. One brick at a time. [Mac Rumors]

TARDIS MAME cabinet makes even Daleks swoon

TARDIS MAME cabinet

There are all sorts of things into which one can stuff a MAME machine, but why not build one into a TARDIS? The Dr. Who blue police box is surely the stuff of TV nerds, but when one combines that with emulated arcade games, well, geekvana surely swirls and creates a vortex of pure bliss for all to enjoy. Or maybe it creates uncomfortable silences. Or whatever. What’s really important is that the machine’s construction is detailed step-by-step in what is easily one of the most impressive cabinets we’ve seen since that one with the keg. Or that one build into an oscilloscope. Wait… was is the one in the dinner table? Ah, we give up.
