Cray supercomputer is world's fastest (that we're allowed to know about)

Seattle-based Cray has been wowing us with massive, ridiculously fast supercomputers since the ’70s, establishing a position for its machines high on every geek’s most wanted list — despite never publishing a Doom benchmark. In recent years the title of “world’s fastest” supercomputer had been lost by the company, ping-ponging from Wako, Japan to Armonk, NY, but is now back in Cray’s hands with the implementation of the XT Jaguar. It’s comprised of over 45,000 quad-core Opteron processors, 362GBTB of memory, and has a 10PB (petabyte) storage array, able to perform calculations at a massive 1.64 petaflops. That’s over one and a half quadrillion operations per second and more than 50 percent faster than IBM’s previous heavyweight. Mind you, Cray is quick to point out that this is the fastest machine being used for non-classified research, a caveat that just makes us even more curious about what’s keeping the Pentagon’s server rooms warm and loud… and apparently orange.

Update: That should be 362 terabytes of memory, not mere gigabytes.

This Robot Wants Your Money, Jerks [Robots]

Here in America, we use paper to pay for things—maybe plastic if we’re lucky. But over in Japan, wireless RFID is gradually becoming the rage. And this NEC robot supports the trend of paying for something without feeling like you’re actually paying for something.

Using the robot is easy enough. You push the touchscreen on its chest to select, say, tickets for an amusement park. Then you wave your FeliCa-enabled wallet phone (RFID device) over the robot’s right hand to, as we can only assume, pay for your tickets and deactivate the robot’s deadly laser security system.

Apparently the system could also incorporate facial recognition to identify frequent visitors, or recommend services based upon their age/gender. And while we know that this terminal is just a kiosk shaped like a robot, we can’t help but to admire the sincere technoanthropomorphism. [IT Media via Pink Tentacle]

LG, Sharp plead guilty to LCD price-fixing, take $585m fine

Filed under:

Allegations of LCD price-fixing have been swirling around for years now, and it looks like at least some of the companies involved have dirt on their hands — LG, Sharp and Chunghwa Picture Tubes have all just pled guilty to price-fixing in a case filed by the US Department of Justice and will pay a combined $585m fine. LG’s taking the biggest hit at $400m for conspiring to fix prices from September 2001 to June 2006, while Sharp’s on the hook for $120m for jacking prices on panels sold to Dell, Motorola and Apple during the same time frame. Naughty, naughty. It also sounds like this plea agreement is more than just a sterile attempt to cut losses — Sharp’s exec staff is taking a 10 to 30 percent pay cut for three months as punishment to reassure its shareholders. Sounds like a plan — how about refunding some of that cash to us chumps out here buying your overpriced products?

Please Touch Pillow Brings Dreams In Vivid Hypercolor [Hypercolor Pillows]

Remember Hypercolor shirts? The heat-sensitive pigment made for an interesting gimmick—but the whole color-changing effect was ruined after a few runs in the wash. I would expect the same thing to happen with these “please touch” lambskin pillows—except this time you would be out $160. Do people really put their pillows in the washing machine anyway? XM and Sirius channels merge at long last

It’s been a long, long time coming but the once separate XM and Sirius universes are now finally, officially intermingling, resulting in some new channels, some renamed channels, some moved channels, and no doubt quite a bit of confusion for satellite radio listeners. The short of it is that XM users can expect to find 22 new channels, while Sirius listeners get 11 (mostly music channels), with a whole slew of other channels either moved, renamed, or both. Dig into the links below for the complete details, and expect to wait two to five minutes to receive the update if you haven’t already turned on your radio today.

Star Trek Plate Covers Won't Make Your Lights Turn On Any Faster [Star Trek]

You can’t wait for the movie. You have the t-shirts, the tricorder replica, the klingon doctorate, your room looks like the Enterprise’s bridge, your face has morphed already into a sexy Vulcanian, and you have been writing your first Star Trek novel for years now. But do you have these plates for your electrical wall thingies? Yeah. That’s what I thought. Go get the three of them for only $18. My favorite by far is the power plug plate:

And yes, it’s TNG and not the original series, but unless you are one of those people who actually have William Shatner albums in their iPod, these will do. [Think Geek]

Keiko the robot patient helps train a new generation of robot doctors

Filed under:

Gifu University’s Graduate School of Medicine, long fed up with subjecting the general public to the horrors of teaching hospitals (you’ve seen Scrubs, right?) has teamed up with the Mizuno Technical Institute in Japan to develop Keiko — an interactive humanoid robot that mimics a number of neurological disorders, responding to the doctor’s touch and even holding rudimentary conversations. The robot gives students the opportunity to observe and diagnose rare brain and nervous system illnesses in a classroom setting, where no one can get hurt — not a bad idea, so long as this doesn’t result in a generation of doctors who confuse “veins” with “wires.”

Samsung A867 Eternity Touchscreen Phone Leaks Out, $99 On AT&T [Cellphones]

We learned about the Eternity, or A867 as it’s also known only last week, and now over at BGR they’ve got hold of more leaked info. It’s a slender full-touchscreen 3G cellphone, with GPS, AT&T mobile TV support. But it’s got just a 3-megapixel camera instead of the rumored 5-megapixel. It uses the Touchwiz UI, which lets you send SMSs in landscape mode, and it looks like it’ll be just $99 after a $50 mail-in rebate, competing it nicely with the iPhone—though it’s not quite so capable. It’s also due in stores very “soon,” although it’s passed an earlier-rumored November 4th launch date. [BGR]

This is the World's First Electronic Feng Shui Compass [Fortune Compass]

I have no idea what a Feng Shui compass is supposed to do (even after reading that explanation), but I do know that this is the world’s first electronic Feng Shui compass—and that’s automatically awesome. Did the crazy people who invented Feng Shui 4,000 years ago imagine that their imaginary system of furniture placement and directional sitting would be adopted into something so…electronic? Would they be ashamed? Proud? Am I going to get killed like Bruce Lee for making fun of Feng Shui? Watch the video to find out. [Fortune Compass]
